Denair High School secured at least a piece of the Southern League championship with a 26-3
win over Delhi on Friday at Jack W. Lytton Stadium.
The Coyotes improve to 8-1 overall and 6-0 in conference action and can drop the curtain on a
perfect league run this week with a win at Waterford. One more victory would give Denair its
first outright league championship in 26 years.
“I don't know if they know about that part of it,” said head coach Anthony Armas. “When
this group of seniors were sophomores, they were in a similar situation with Waterford. Both
were tied for the league title going into the last game, and the game ended in a tie. Our kids
want to make sure we end the year on top … alone. I believe that is what is motivating them.”
Despite the victory, the Coyotes slipped one spot to No. 5 in MaxPreps’ Sac-Joaquin Section
Division 7 ratings. Reigning state champ Calaveras (8-1) remains No. 1, followed by Golden
Sierra (8-1), Linden (6-3), and River Islands (8-2), which jumped two spots from No. 6 – and past
the Coyotes – after a win over Big Valley Christian. Mariposa (7-2), Rio Vista (6-3), and
Summerville (3-5) round out the top eight.
Against the Hawks, junior running back John Wilmoth had more than 200 total yards from
scrimmage, rushing for 126 yards and a touchdown on six attempts and catching one pass from
quarterback Derek Potter for an 81-yard TD. Noah Chavez contributed 60 yards and two
touchdowns on five carries, while Connor Hart added 36 yards on seven totes. Hart also
contributed 10 tackles from his middle linebacker position on defense. Jose Mora had 11
tackles, including one for a loss.
A 20-yard TD run by Chavez gave the Coyotes a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, and Wilmoth made
it 14-0 with a 66-yard jaunt to the end zone made. The Potter-to-Wilmoth connection gave
Denair a 20-0 halftime lead.
After Delhi’s fourth-quarter field goal made it 20-3, Chavez’s 15-yard TD run produced the final
margin.
