Denair Grinds its Way to 26-6 Win Over Brookside

There’s nothing like giving up a 99-yard touchdown pass to get a defense’s attention. Such was the case in Denair’s 26-6 victory Friday night over Brookside Christian, which shocked the Coyotes with a long throw-and-catch while backed up on its own 1-yard line early in the game.

They were the only points Denair surrendered.

“It was a 20- or 30-yard pass, kind of a jump ball, and their kid came down with it and got loose,” said Denair Coach Anthony Armas. “After that, we really settled down.”

Having scouted Brookside Christian (0-3) on tape, Armas and his staff were prepared for the Knights’ passing attack. Denair (2-1) replaced a lineman with outside linebacker Blake Davis, who helped secure some of the short zones on defense. And despite often rushing just three players, Denair got plenty of pressure on the Brookside quarterback, forcing him into hurried and off-balance throws that led to four interceptions – three by Justin Steeley and another by flu-ridden Chase Pritt.

On offense, the Coyotes relied on a consistent running attack the entire game. Despite being stopped on the 1-yard line on its first drive – the one that preceded the Knights’ long TD pass – Denair dominated up front, consistently opening holes for running backs Brendan Curnow (3 TDs) and Steeley (1 TD).

“We’re grinding (drives) out,” Armas said. “They were stacking the box. We had a couple of issues protection-wise, but we could run the ball when we needed to.”

Denair took the lead for good in the second quarter with a TD run and two-point conversion. The Coyotes expanded on their 8-6 halftime advantage with three more scores, all on the ground.

“They were definitely a first-half team,” Armas said. “They’re kind of in the same boat we are. They only had 19 kids. We figured we’d run the ball and wear them down.

“We ran the ball well, but I still think we’re not where we need to be. We still missed some assignments. Our running backs are running hard, though. The effort is there.”

This week: Denair has a bye, giving the team plenty of time to recover from a mild flu bug that slowed some players last week. The next game is the Southern League opener Sept. 23 at Gustine. Armas and his staff will have a chance to scout Gustine on Friday night at Modesto Christian. “We’ll try to keep the routine pretty much the same this week, but we’ll probably practice in shells (helmets, shoulder pads and shorts) on Monday.”

Bottom Line in Denair: More Students Than Expected Will Lead to Pay Raises for Staff

The shared satisfaction associated with growing enrollment in the Denair Unified School District this year led to a frank discussion between teachers and trustees at Thursday night’s board meeting: When will the extra money tied to more students lead to more pay for staff?

Board members and administrators were adamant that teachers and classified staff who took pay cuts of 8% or more in 2013 as the district faced financial crisis are in line for unspecified raises. But the leaders also cautioned that it will be at least until October – when 2016-17 enrollment is locked in by the state – before they can begin to analyze how much they can afford to add to paychecks and when.

The district has 1,306 students on its four campuses, well above the 1,243 anticipated in this year’s budget. Under the state’s funding formula, each student is worth about $8,000 in average daily attendance (ADA), the primary funding mechanism for public schools.

Knowing that, about a dozen teachers attended Thursday’s meeting to lobby for salary restoration. Their request led to assurances from Superintendent Aaron Rosander and Board President Sandi Dirkse that more money will be shared with all employees.

“The plan is to restore. As the enrollment grows and ADA increases, my recommendation to the board will be to restore salaries,” Rosander said.

Dirkse was passionate in her acknowledgment of the financial sacrifices made by staff, saying: “It is absolutely our desire to see salaries restored. We understand that the district is nothing without our teachers. It’s absolutely our priority. As soon as we see that ongoing money, it’s yours. When we have the money, we want you to have it. We want to see that everyone across all salary schedules is restored.” Continue reading “Bottom Line in Denair: More Students Than Expected Will Lead to Pay Raises for Staff” »

DHS Volleyball and Cross Country Teams Also in Action this Fall

Football may be king on Friday night, but there are two other sports being contested this fall by Denair High athletes – volleyball and, for the first time, boys and girls cross country. Here’s a quick look at what to expect from those teams.

Volleyball

There was big news even before the season started as the players had to absorb a late coaching change. Second-year coach David Lewellen, who is a walk-on, will not be available for at least half the season because of scheduling conflict with his law enforcement job.

With long odds of finding another coach at the last minute, Denair Athletic Director Darrin Allen stepped into the breach. He and volunteer assistant Yulissa Tafoya will fill the void, with Lewellen coming to as many practices as he can make.

“I can’t be here as much, but it’s made it an easier transition having all these people to help,” Lewellen told the Turlock Journal.

The Coyotes didn’t win a match last year, going 0-14 in the Southern League and 0-15 overall. Still, with four seniors returning, many of the girls having gained experience and the addition of a talented transfer, Denair has reasons for optimism.

The seniors are Vickie Adler, Ileah Brantley, Kelsey Park and Eva Varni. The transfer is 6-foot-1 outside hitter Cheyenne Souza, a sophomore who attended Pitman High in Turlock last year.

“She is very good,” said Lewellen. “She can almost be playing anywhere and I am really excited with the team this year. The fact that she wanted to come here and play with us is a huge confidence booster.” Continue reading “DHS Volleyball and Cross Country Teams Also in Action this Fall” »

Everything Goes Right for Denair, Scores 11 TDs in 73-6 Rout of Delta

The good vibes started on the very first play of the game. Denair’s Nicholas Hawkes took a short kickoff from Delta, turned right toward the home team bench and raced 80 yards for a touchdown, igniting the Coyotes and their crowd. By the time the first quarter ended, Denair already had scored five TDs on its way to a surprisingly lopsided 73-6 victory.

Denair’s 11 touchdowns came almost every way imaginable. Chase Pritt had his best game ever with three scores, and each was different (55-yard defensive score, 52-yard punt return and 53-yard run). Justin Steeley and Justin Gomes also scored twice apiece, all on runs. Blake Davis returned another interception for yet another TD.

It was the most points the Coyotes (1-1) had scored in anyone’s memory.  By comparison, in the entire 2015 season, Denair had 156 points. Friday night, it had nearly half of that total in one game.

“We told the kids after the game that we thought we played well, but not 73 points well,” assessed second-year coach Anthony Armas. “There are still some things we need to work on and fix.”

One of the things the Coyotes addressed after the first week was protecting the ball. They had the lead in the second half against Summerville, but fumbled twice among their four turnovers for the game. The mistakes led to a 27-19 Denair loss.

The ball security message clearly sank in against Delta (0-2) of Clarksburg.

“We never punted and we never turned it over,” said Armas. “I was happy with that.” Continue reading “Everything Goes Right for Denair, Scores 11 TDs in 73-6 Rout of Delta” »
