Brendan Curnow’s six touchdowns Friday night in a 50-0 demolition of Le Grand may or may not have set a school record. When you’ve been playing football since 1946 – as Denair High has – there is a lot of history to chronicle, though not all of it is written down. For sure, Curnow’s performance is one of the best any Coyote has ever had.

And still that may not have been the most interesting takeaway from a game that Denair dominated from start to finish.

The fact is the Coyotes suited up just 13 players – and then had Jarred Carbajal go down with a dislocated left shoulder on the opening kickoff. It takes 11 players to field a team, meaning Denair played the rest of the game with only one reserve. There were many more coaches on the sideline than extra players.

“Every time we had a hard hit, I kind of freaked out until everyone got up,” admitted head coach Anthony Armas.

He said his coaching staff had 30 seconds before the first offensive series to “teach” Justin Gomes how to play tight end to replace Carbajal, who already was subbing for the injured Dylan Mann.

Low on bodies, the Coyotes nonetheless imposed their will on Le Grand, racing to a 26-0 halftime lead behind running backs Curnow, Justin Steeley and Chase Pritt, who shredded the beleaguered Bulldogs’ defense.

Steeley opened the onslaught with a 74-yard run – the first of eight touchdowns the Coyotes would score. Curnow took over from there. The senior back scored on runs of 25, 53, 35, 41 and 25 yards again, and then took a screen pass from Kyle Prock 80 yards for another TD to cap a memorable night. Denair Loses 35-14 to Much Bigger Gustine Team

In football, bigger, stronger, faster players often have an advantage. It’s as true in the Southern League as it is on Sundays in the NFL. Denair knows all too well the difference size can make after its 35-14 loss Friday night to Gustine.

Gustine trotted out 12 players who weigh at least 200 pounds against the Coyotes. That’s nearly half the Reds’ 26-member team. Four of them tip the scales at 250 pounds or more. They’re big boys. Compare that to Denair’s 16 players, only one of whom weighs more than 200 (Joe Brasil at 230).

More than anything else, the physical mismatch explains Friday’s result in the Southern League opener for both schools.

“Their size was a big issue,” admitted Denair Coach Anthony Armas. “They had a big offensive line and that gave us some problems.

Rather than trying to beat blockers straight up, the Coyote defenders shot gaps and tried to use their speed to slow down the Gustine offense. And though it made some good plays, especially in the second half, Denair’s defense was gouged for too many big runs and big passes in the first half as Gustine raced to a 28-6 lead.

The teams traded touchdowns in the third quarter, but the early deficit and a few key penalties that negated big plays by the Denair offense were too much to overcome.

“It was just one of those nights. Everything went their way,” said Armas, whose team dropped to 2-2 overall. “They were a lot better than we thought, but like I told the kids after the game, ‘That team was better than us, but not 35-14 better than us.’ ”

Junior varsity game: Denair won 22-8. It is 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the Southern League. Continue reading “Denair Loses 35-14 to Much Bigger Gustine Team” »

Denair Grinds its Way to 26-6 Win Over Brookside

There’s nothing like giving up a 99-yard touchdown pass to get a defense’s attention. Such was the case in Denair’s 26-6 victory Friday night over Brookside Christian, which shocked the Coyotes with a long throw-and-catch while backed up on its own 1-yard line early in the game.

They were the only points Denair surrendered.

“It was a 20- or 30-yard pass, kind of a jump ball, and their kid came down with it and got loose,” said Denair Coach Anthony Armas. “After that, we really settled down.”

Having scouted Brookside Christian (0-3) on tape, Armas and his staff were prepared for the Knights’ passing attack. Denair (2-1) replaced a lineman with outside linebacker Blake Davis, who helped secure some of the short zones on defense. And despite often rushing just three players, Denair got plenty of pressure on the Brookside quarterback, forcing him into hurried and off-balance throws that led to four interceptions – three by Justin Steeley and another by flu-ridden Chase Pritt.

On offense, the Coyotes relied on a consistent running attack the entire game. Despite being stopped on the 1-yard line on its first drive – the one that preceded the Knights’ long TD pass – Denair dominated up front, consistently opening holes for running backs Brendan Curnow (3 TDs) and Steeley (1 TD).

“We’re grinding (drives) out,” Armas said. “They were stacking the box. We had a couple of issues protection-wise, but we could run the ball when we needed to.”

Denair took the lead for good in the second quarter with a TD run and two-point conversion. The Coyotes expanded on their 8-6 halftime advantage with three more scores, all on the ground.

“They were definitely a first-half team,” Armas said. “They’re kind of in the same boat we are. They only had 19 kids. We figured we’d run the ball and wear them down.

“We ran the ball well, but I still think we’re not where we need to be. We still missed some assignments. Our running backs are running hard, though. The effort is there.”

This week: Denair has a bye, giving the team plenty of time to recover from a mild flu bug that slowed some players last week. The next game is the Southern League opener Sept. 23 at Gustine. Armas and his staff will have a chance to scout Gustine on Friday night at Modesto Christian. “We’ll try to keep the routine pretty much the same this week, but we’ll probably practice in shells (helmets, shoulder pads and shorts) on Monday.”

Everything Goes Right for Denair, Scores 11 TDs in 73-6 Rout of Delta

The good vibes started on the very first play of the game. Denair’s Nicholas Hawkes took a short kickoff from Delta, turned right toward the home team bench and raced 80 yards for a touchdown, igniting the Coyotes and their crowd. By the time the first quarter ended, Denair already had scored five TDs on its way to a surprisingly lopsided 73-6 victory.

Denair’s 11 touchdowns came almost every way imaginable. Chase Pritt had his best game ever with three scores, and each was different (55-yard defensive score, 52-yard punt return and 53-yard run). Justin Steeley and Justin Gomes also scored twice apiece, all on runs. Blake Davis returned another interception for yet another TD.

It was the most points the Coyotes (1-1) had scored in anyone’s memory.  By comparison, in the entire 2015 season, Denair had 156 points. Friday night, it had nearly half of that total in one game.

“We told the kids after the game that we thought we played well, but not 73 points well,” assessed second-year coach Anthony Armas. “There are still some things we need to work on and fix.”

One of the things the Coyotes addressed after the first week was protecting the ball. They had the lead in the second half against Summerville, but fumbled twice among their four turnovers for the game. The mistakes led to a 27-19 Denair loss.

The ball security message clearly sank in against Delta (0-2) of Clarksburg.

“We never punted and we never turned it over,” said Armas. “I was happy with that.” Continue reading “Everything Goes Right for Denair, Scores 11 TDs in 73-6 Rout of Delta” »

4 Turnovers Torpedo Coyotes in 27-19 Loss to Summerville in Season Opener

Hang on to the ball and they have a chance. That’s what Denair High football coach Anthony Armas will be drilling into his players this week after a frustrating 27-19 loss to Summerville in the season opener Friday night.

The scrappy Coyotes, who dressed just 16 players, were undone by three fumbles and an interception. Two of the fumbles came in the second half, when Summerville rallied from a 19-13 deficit to take the lead. The interception came on the final play of regulation, when Denair quarterback Kyle Prock heaved a pass toward a teammate rather than take a sack that would have allowed the game clock to expire.

“We did well. We were able to move the ball, but the turnovers in the second half killed us,” said Armas.

More than 1,000 fans were treated to a back-and-forth game on a beautiful summer night at Jack Lytton Stadium.

The Bears (1-0) opened the scoring on a 10-yard pass from Gabe Walker to Zach Marquez in the first quarter.

The Coyotes (0-1) came storming back, taking advantage of Summerville’s own sloppiness (three turnovers in the first half).

Justin Steeley tied the game at 7-7 on a 7-yard run to cap off a nice drive. Then late in the first quarter, after the Coyotes’ recovered a fumble, Prock found Blake Davis on a 35-yard pass for another touchdown. A missed extra point left Denair on top 13-7.

Summerville tied the game on a TD run, but Denair wasn’t done. The Coyotes put together another nice drive that culminated in Brendan Curnow’s 1-yard score and a 19-13 lead after the two-point conversion attempt failed.
